Sara Twining’s journey to accounting wasn’t a straight path, but once she found her fit, she committed to building a strong foundation for her future in the field.

After earning her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Arkansas in May 2025, Twining’s path to the major evolved through exploration across multiple disciplines. Initially starting in marketing and later transitioning to finance, she discovered her interest in accounting. Prior to graduation, she was selected as the Integrated Master of Accounting's 2026 Graduate Outstanding Program Scholar in recognition of her hard work and achievements.

Below, Sara shares more about her journey, her experience in the program, and her advice for others considering a future in accounting.

Did you always plan on a career in accounting?

I didn’t initially plan to go into accounting. When I came to the University of Arkansas, I knew I wanted to study business but wasn’t sure which area was the best fit. I started in marketing, then switched to finance. I didn’t have much exposure to accounting before taking my first course, but I found that I really liked the material and the way it was structured. I began to consider pursuing accounting, but didn’t make the switch until the following semester. During Principles of Accounting II, Dr. Barry Bryan came in to talk about the iMACC program. After hearing this talk about the opportunities this program can provide, I switched my major to accounting that day.

What made you choose the Integrated Master of Accounting program?

I considered other programs, but I had a really positive experience during my undergraduate years at Arkansas. The professors were supportive and genuinely invested in students, and I was surrounded by peers who were motivated and easy to work with. The program’s CPA pass rates and job placement outcomes were also strong, which made it feel like a great choice. Overall, it felt like the right place to continue building on what I had already started. Additionally, I’ve loved my time in Fayetteville and was more than happy to stay for another year!

What is your current job? How are you applying what you’re learning in the program?

I’m currently working as a Graduate Assistant for Intermediate Accounting II. I took the class in Fall 2024 and enjoyed it, so it’s been a good experience coming back to it in a different role. Between taking the course and studying for the CPA over the past year, I’ve developed a solid understanding of the material, and being a GA has helped reinforce that while also giving me the chance to help other students work through it.

In September, I will be starting as a Venture Capital Audit Associate at Frank, Rimerman + Co. in San Diego. I’m looking forward to applying what I’ve learned in a more practical setting and continuing to build on it.

What are your favorite moments or memories from the program?

One of the things I’ve appreciated most is the environment within the program. Everyone is working toward similar goals, so there’s a mutual understanding of the workload and expectations, which makes it easier to help each other.

I’ve also really valued the relationships with professors. They’re approachable and willing to help, whether it’s with class material, CPA advice, or career decisions. Their support has been a huge help throughout this program.

As you approach graduation, what advice would you give to prospective or current students?

I would say to stay consistent and be patient with the process. There are times when balancing CPA studying, coursework, and other responsibilities can feel overwhelming. It helps to stay organized and find a routine that works for you, especially when things get busy. At the same time, it’s important to step back when needed and manage stress in a way that keeps you from burning out. It can be challenging, but it’s manageable if you keep at it.

How has the program prepared you for future success?

The program has done a good job of preparing me both technically and professionally. One of the biggest impacts has been the emphasis on the CPA exam. The encouragement from professors, especially Dr. Bryan, made a difference in pushing me to take it seriously and complete it early.

In addition, the program highlights the range of career paths available in accounting, which helped me better understand where I wanted to go. There’s also a strong focus on communication and professionalism, which are just as important as the technical accounting skills. Overall, I feel well-prepared to start my career and continue developing over time.
