Sarah Lawlis found a way to merge creativity with analytics, transforming an early passion for design into a data-driven approach to problem-solving.

After earning her Bachelor of Science in Data Science from the University of Arkansas in May 2025, Lawlis shifted from an initial interest in art and design to a path in analytics, where she discovered a natural overlap between creativity and technical thinking. Now completing her Master of Applied Business Analytics, she has been selected as the 2026 Graduate Outstanding Program Scholar.

Below, Sarah shares more about her journey, her experience in the program, and her advice for future students.

Did you always plan on a career as an analyst?

No, I originally planned to pursue a career in art and design and began my college coursework in that field. At the same time, I always enjoyed math and statistics, which led me to explore data science during my undergraduate studies. I quickly discovered that analytics blends creativity and problem-solving in a way that felt familiar, and I realized I could still “design” just by building insights and data-driven solutions instead.

What made you choose the full-time Master of Business Analytics program?

While I already had a technical background, I wanted to strengthen my ability to use data to make confident business decisions. After shadowing classes and speaking with faculty in the program, it became clear that the full-time MABA would help me bridge the gap between technical analytics and real-world business impact. I felt confident the program would prepare me to apply analytics thoughtfully and effectively in the workforce.

What is your current job? How are you applying what you’re learning in the program?

I currently work as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Data Science department, supporting Data Visualization & Communication and Data Management & Database. In this role, I use what I’m learning in the MABA program to help students connect their technical skills to real decision-making. The program has also helped me think more about analytics in a business context, which I use when assisting students and giving feedback on their work.

What are your favorite moments or memories from the program?

One of my favorite experiences in the program was taking the Decision Support course taught by Dr. G. She brought her own industry experience into the classroom (along with snacks for us every day) and used interactive activities that led to a lot of "lightbulb" moments. The class focused on real decision-making and tradeoffs, and she made it a fun, engaging environment where we all wanted to participate.

As you approach graduation, what advice would you give to prospective or current students?

Leverage your professors beyond the classroom. This program has fantastic faculty - many coming from industry - who not only teach concepts in class but also have a lot to offer in terms of professional development. They understand the hard and soft skills employers are looking for and are excited to mentor students as they break into the workforce. The advice and support I’ve received from the faculty here has been just as valuable as the course material itself.

How has the program prepared you for future success?

The program has helped me better understand the assumptions and tradeoffs that come with using analytics to make business decisions. I’ve learned to think beyond the technical side and focus on what the data can and can’t tell you, and how different choices impact outcomes. This mindset has been especially helpful in interviews, where I’ve been able to talk through ambiguous scenarios and explain my reasoning. In a job market where AI and analytics tools are becoming more accessible, the ability to interpret results, question assumptions, and make thoughtful recommendations really stands out. The program has helped me develop that decision-making mindset and prepared me to apply analytics in a practical, business-focused way.
