“I am the master of my fate and captain of my soul.” says Ken Ford, Ph.D. student at the University of Arkansas. Ken shows great motivation and believes in maximizing his potential here at the Sam M. Walton College of Business where he is pursuing a Ph.D. in Finance.

A former investment analysis manager for Delhaize Group, an international group of food retailers, and adjunct professor at Livingstone College, Ken chose to leave behind the work of corporate America for academia. Although it was a difficult decision, Ken had the support of many friends and family members who have also earned their doctoral degrees, and who understand “the merits and benefits of life as an academician”.

Paramount to Ken’s decision was a proper fit in school-choice. Not just any university would do. After much research, Ken chose the University of Arkansas. Supportive faculty, the livability of Fayetteville, opportunities to attend and present at conferences, and world-class networking opportunities all played roles in Ken’s decision.

Arkansas was a big change from North Carolina, but Ken has traveled the country and has lived in a variety of places including: Cleveland, Omaha, Lincoln, Chapel Hill, and Charlotte. His two favorite towns have been Washington D.C. and New York City, with their diverse cultures and professional opportunities.

For those considering graduate school, Ken highly recommends becoming “a subject matter expert in something you enjoy, not something somebody else likes/enjoys.” Also, don’t focus solely on school rankings.

Choose the school that fits you best, and if possible, a school that clearly wants you…where, perhaps, you are their #1 prospective student.

It is important to make the effort to find the right school for you.

Life as a doctoral candidate can be stressful, but Ken finds time to exercise both his mind and his body. While en route to his Ph.D., Ken is taking advantage of the amenities of the Natural State. He has earned a 2nd degree black belt in Shito Ryu karate, and stays active by teaching karate to children. Ken also enjoys Crossfit and golfing in Northwest Arkansas. A bright future awaits Ken.

Simply put, I am motivated to the best person possible. Everybody is blessed with potential and I believe I am obligated to maximize mine.
