Forty potential transfer students from Northwest Arkansas Community College visited the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas to learn about programs, resources and curriculum in the college.
Most of the students attending the session on Friday, Feb. 16, are looking to begin at the Walton College in Fall 2018.
“This is our sixth year to host these students,” said J.R. Hinkson, associate director for undergraduate programs at Walton’s Undergraduate Programs Office. “It gets better every year. This year I’m particularly excited about the club and resource fair we’ve added. I expect it to remain part of the program moving forward.”
Several clubs and organizations set up tables in the atrium of Willard J. Walker Hall
to speak with students about activities, membership and services. Groups represented
were the American Marketing Association, Association for Information Systems, Leadership Walton, Walton Finance Association, Business Communication Lab, Walton Honors Program, Enactus, Off-Campus Student Services and the Graduate School of Business.
As usual, a highlight of the day was a question-and-answer session with current Walton
College students – all transfer students from NWACC themselves. The panel consisted
of Carol Caster, a finance and accounting student; Joshan Cortez, information systems;
Luz Hernandez, marketing; Julia Kofler, management; and Amanda Sparks, finance. The
panel answered questions for nearly 45 minutes on topics ranging from where to park
and how to get around campus to advice on success in U of A classes.
After hearing information about Walton’s curriculum, the potential transfer students
were given a broad overview of admissions information by Amber Roth, associate director
for new student orientation and transfer central in the U of A Office of Admissions. “We appreciate the opportunity to present to these students,” Roth said. “The support
that the Walton College provides not only to NWACC students, but to all transfer students,
helps our office highlight the wonderful opportunities that await transfer students
interested in pursuing a business degree.”
The day ended with lunch and a tour of campus from Walton and U of A ambassadors.
“We want these students to come to Walton,” Hinkson said. “Most of them will have
their Associate’s Degree this year, so they are students dedicated to achieving their
goals. We are always excited about showing them what our college can offer next.”
